Only Low Sulphur Gasoil (LSGO) sold on the Zambian Market

The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has assured members of the public that the only diesel currently being sold on the Zambian market is Low Sulphur Gasoil (LSGO). Therefore, despite the different colour codes for diesel pumps at some service stations, the type of diesel sold is all LSGO as there is no longer ordinary diesel on the market.

It should be noted that the process to standardise the colour codes and labels for all diesel pumps at retail service stations and bulk storage facilities around the country is currently underway. In that regard, the ERB directed Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), transporters and retailers of petroleum products to standardise the diesel colour codes and labels on storage and handling facilities in the supply chain to the colour purple which is the standard colour code for LSGO. The deadline for implementation of this directive is 17th September, 2022.

There are reports that some motorists are hesitant to purchase diesel dispensed from the yellow labelled pumps on account of suspected residual ordinary diesel stocks that may still be contained in storage tanks at service stations. However, the ERB has reassured that regular inspections are carried out to monitor the quality of fuel on the Zambian market. Based on such inspections, the diesel sold meets the Zambia Bureau of Standards quality specifications for LSGO.
